About ICACSI 2024

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Carbon Science and Innovation (COE-CSI) hosted the inaugural International Conference on Advances in Carbon Science and Innovation (ICACSI) on 11–13 November 2024 in Sydney, which was a resounding success. The three-day conference attracted more than 240 participants from 13 countries, bringing together a diverse group of scientists, engineers, researchers, and students. Attendees came from a range of disciplines, united by their shared interest in exploring the latest advancements and trends in carbon science and innovation.

The conference covered five key themes:

  1. Carbon Materials, Characterisation, and Modelling
  2. Carbon for Catalysis
  3. Carbon for Energy
  4. Carbon for the Environment
  5. Carbon for Biomedicine

A highlight of the event was the Journal Editors Forum, where experts from leading scientific journals discussed topics including interdisciplinary publishing, strategies for achieving high-impact research and the importance of open access publishing for advancing global scientific collaboration. The event also included poster presentations, which provided opportunities for early-career researchers and students to showcase their work and engage in discussions with carbon science and innovation experts.

Sponsored by eleven industry and partner organisations, ICACSI 2024 provided an important platform for COE-CSI to engage with industry and forge strong stakeholder partnerships. Four exhibitors also partnered with COE-CSI to promote their products and services to the conference audience. We look forward to developing lasting relationships with industry partners to support research translation and enhance our Centre’s outreach efforts.

ICACSI 2024 helped to foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaboration, facilitating important networking opportunities for Centre staff and affiliates. By bringing together researchers from across Australia and the world, ICACSI 2024 played an important role in strengthening global research collaboration in carbon science and innovation.

Nine early-career researchers and HDR students were recognised with best poster/oral presentation awards at our conference, as selected by an independent jury. We are proud to celebrate this achievement of these early-career researchers, presenting some of their work at our Centre to such a high-calibre international audience. Congratulations to the winners:

  • Dr Quanbin Dai (The University of New South Wales)
  • Lin Jiang (The University of Adelaide)
  • Dr Syam Gopala Krishnan (The University of Melbourne)
  • Prof Jaebeom Lee (Chungnam National University)
  • Dr Yan Li (The University of New South Wales)
  • Dr Ladan Malehmirchegini (Kyushu University – I2CNER)
  • Weihao Song (Beijing University of Chemical Technology)
  • Shen Wei (Lanzhou University)
  • Dr Doudou Zhang (Macquarie University)

Thank you to all the speakers who travelled to attend 2024 ICACSI and shared their research and insights on carbon science and innovation, and congratulations to the oral and poster presentation winners. Thank you to our sponsors for your generous support.

Our Centre looks forward to seeing everyone again in our next ICACSI conference!
